Hans Wegner, The chair

Hans Wegner is known as the “King of Chairs” throughout the design world, having created over 500 unique chair designs during his illustrious career, over 100 of which enjoyed commercial production runs. Like so many of our designer friends - Wegner was a driven perfectionist having once said, “if only you could design just one good chair in your life… but you simply cannot.” Well, Hans, we respectfully disagree, and collectively stand in awe of the countless “good chairs” that you plucked from Plato’s timeless realm of idealized forms.

One of our lovely clients - recognizing Hans Wegner’s iconic design for “The Chair” among a sea of far less distinguished office furniture - took the liberty of redeeming this stunning example from a law office where once Madmen-esque office trappings had steadily been replaced by cheap, Office Space doldrums. This particular example needed a keen eye and a bit of love to restore it to its former glory, but our team at Total Leather Care was happily up to the challenge. Gentle restoration of the incredible woodwork (just check out those joins in the backrest and swoon!) brought back the warm, rosy hues of the natural walnut, and light sanding with oil yielded the same smooth finish that would have been worthy of Don Draper’s corner office. But, seeing as it’s 2025, Don Draper has some stiff competition from his female colleagues, and this chair called for a touch of the feminine mystique with a seat freshly upholstered in a soft, pink leather hide. We think the play of the blushing wood against the pale pink leather is the perfect combination for anyone’s office and proves just how wrong Hans was when he lamented the elusiveness of the perfect chair!
